To accompany its contemplative resort 2022 collection at Afterpay Australian Fashion Week, local favourites bassike opted for a similarly stripped-back beauty aesthetic. It was a look that typified what the brand does best – elevated casual pieces that recall the days we Aussies once stepped straight off the beach to attend sand-side soirées. Like the brand’s moniker, the hair and makeup looks offered a sophisticated take on the everyday, as evidenced by the fresh complexions and sleek locks seen on the resort 22 Sydney runway.

Goldwell‘s co-hair directors, Karine Strachan and Pauline Prechonnet, created wet-look locks that were combed away from the face and gathered into soft plaits and braids with a damp, high-shine finish – almost as if the wearer had neatly twisted it back after a dip in the Med (if only). When not secured in a plait, models wore their locks loose and natural to complement the wash of colour in the carbon-neutral show.

Meanwhile MECCA was on makeup, with makeup director Jennifer Horsley imagining naturally incandescent skin with a wisp of floating accent eyeliner hovering just over the crease of the eyelid. The makeup team used an edit of MECCA’s conscious beauty brands, including RMS Beauty and Kosas, to reflect bassike’s sustainable ethos for the delicate, highly wearable look.

“I wanted to celebrate each model’s unique features and play with colour in a really interesting way, it’s about balance for me. Using MECCA’s conscious brands, I focused on skin prep through skincare layering and massage to encourage intense hydration and give a unique plumping effect to the complexion,” explained Horsley of the look she created for bassike’s Resort 22 runway.

Horsely eschewed heavy powder products in favour of a barely-there effect. “The makeup is fresh with only cream products used to add a skin-like finish with subtle sheen. Brows are lightly brushed then set in place and an unexpected floating liner in varying shades gives the look strength and interest,” she explained, adding, “All liner colours were inspired by the bassike collection and carefully considered to create harmony on the runway.”
